Design and Technologies Knowledge and Understanding

Investigate food and fibre production and food technologies used in modern and traditional societies (ACTDEK012).

  • Identifying areas in Australia and Asia where major food or fibre plants and animals are grown or bred, for example the wheat and sheep belts, areas where sugar cane or rice are grown, northern Australia's beef industry, plantation and native forest areas.

 

Design and Technologies Processes and Production Skills

Plan a sequence of production skills when making designed solutions individually and collaboratively (ACTDEP018).

  • Identifying the steps in a mass production process.

Unit Plan - Where does my food come from?

In this unit plan students explore the processes in food and fibre production and areas which they are grown or bred in Australia and Asia.

 

The unit plan includes -

  • Splash ABC: Teacher resource from paddock to plate - includes videos on growing wheat, rice, and apples; farming animals for milk and honey; and processing rice for the supermarket and making bread from flour

  • In addition to the interactive games included within the unit coolfoodplanet.org is another that allows students to explore the paddock to plate journey of food. There are two versions to select from in the home screen - 6-8 year old and 9-12 year old
